One of the ways to allow Scripture to furnish our imaginations and seep into our souls is to pray the Psalms.
Here’s an example of allowing a portion of Psalm 37 form a basis for prayer and devotion:
“Trust in the Lord…”
Lord, I choose to trust you today. Though there are a myriad of matters I am faced with, and troubles and woes in the world I don’t understand, you are utterly trustworthy. I trust you with all my heart.
“Take delight in the Lord…”
I love you Lord. You have been so good to me and so kind. I can’t wait to see you one day and gaze on your beauty and majesty. In the midst of this dark world you shine brighter than the sun. I praise you for your goodness and grace.
“Commit your way to the Lord…”
Here I am Lord with my plans, my lists and my work for today. I give them all to you and lay them at your feet. Show me the way I should go; show me what to focus on and take away the things I don’t need. Let your will be done in my life today.
“Be still before the Lord…”
I take a long slow breath before you Lord. Quieten my busy mind, rest my anxious heart. Even when I’m active Lord, create a chamber of sweet silence and stillness in my heart, where I can be still in your presence.
Amen.
Doing something like this in the morning and then coming back to the prayer during the day and before you sleep helps weave the truths and light of God’s Word into the mundane and normal rhythms of our lives.
